REFLECTION:
Class this semester has been quite the journey. I entered the class full of anticipation, and was really excited about creating a magazine that encompassed my beliefs and diversity. However, I had a few complications as I needed to have collaberators in my magazine and getting people to submit became a bit of a challenge. I also found myself contstantly having to adapt as orginally I was going to have a theme, but after feedback from others, I realized that would be too challenging. Overall this class taught me how difficult it can be to partner with someone on art, as deadlines tend to be subjective.
Definition of Zine: A small version of a magazine, generally in connection with pop culture
NOBIS is a communal based magazine with a collaborative team behind the process. The mission of which is to show real voices to the reader as they engage visually and analytically.
The Zine is meant to be an unfiltered sense of culture for the world, and the work submitted by people with diverse backgrounds and voices, all of which are also students. We pride ourselves on our ability to give a raw voice to the world, often not heard as media tends to distort the public voice.
Personally, as I grew up in a predominantly athletics-oriented community, I have had to seek out my own artistic resources. I have limited artistic resources in my high school, therefore much of my own time has been spent with other artists in the community, from illustrators and apparel designers to dancers and painters. This need to seek out my own mentors has taught me to not only be a very resourceful artist, but also a well-rounded one, having had teachers from a large variety of fields. NOBIS is a learning experience stemming from that background, as many of these people have taught me a key thing in life; authenticity.
I value art and design because the communication between viewer and creator can be so much more than how someone uses or interprets a piece. I want what I make to matter and not just in the aesthetic way. I want my work to genuinely improve the human experience and for people to interact with my creations and be moved by their contribution.
NOBIS combines it all, by not only being an unfiltered look at the world around us, but also can give inspiration and motivation to the viewer. NOBIS is everything from a form of protest to a gallery wall, and that is exactly the intention.
